The lid is the point. An open basket puts damp towels on display and lets the smell out; a lid keeps both in, and this one opens one-handed so you can drop things in while carrying the rest.

How do I clean it?

Glass bodies and silicone seals wash normally. Hand-wash any wooden lid and dry it straight away; a dishwasher dries the wood out and splits it.
